Coffered Ceiling

Coffered Ceiling

A coffered ceiling includes boxlike recessed regions between beams. Originally devised as a way to enhance the load of thick rock ceilings in Roman and Greek architecture, coffered ceilings are currently an ornamentation to provide the appearance of coffering. Constructed with real or artificial beams, trimmed out with moldings and painted, and they may be extremely formal and comprehensive.
