Asbestos is a naturally occurring material that has been widely utilized in manufactured building materials, such as ceiling tiles and insulation. However it was afterwards found that asbestos particles can present health risks, such as lung disorder. States such as California started banning the use of asbestos as early as the 1970s. Asbestos isn’t utilized in new construction today; however, if you live in or buy a mobile home which was manufactured before the 1970s the ceilings may contain asbestos.

Contact a certified asbestos testing laboratory for advice. Some labs will come to your house and perform the testing, while others will test samples that you send into them. In California, the Department of Occupational Safety and Health includes a listing of the licensed and experienced asbestos testing businesses.

Prepare the area for the testing when you plan to take your sample and then send it in for testing. Switch off any ventilation system in your house, for example, heating or air conditioning. Shut the windows in the space too.

Spray water combined with a little bit of detergent on a small area of the ceiling by means of a spray bottle. Permit the water to saturate the area.

Cut out a small section of the ceiling, approximately 1 inch by 1 inch.

Set the section to the sample container provided by the testing lab or something which can be sealed like a plastic bag or bag.

Catch off the sample to the testing lab with any necessary paper work.
